formed as a beaker, the funnel bowl elaborately cut with foliage scrolls reserving two coats of arms, the reverse with a further armorial, with silver-gilt mount at foot, 10.4cm., 4 1/8 in. high, together with a mounted glass engraved with bands of scrolls, 11.7cm., 4 5/8 in. high
Provenance
Formerly at Schloss Trachenberg, Silesia
Condition
The armorial rock crystal cup is overall in good condition with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. A semi-circular section at the rim has been replaced with engraved glass; the replacement section has two further restored breaks. There is also what appears to be a small reattachment and an associated minor crack at the rim. There are a few further minor chips around the rim. There are a few very minor naturally occurring flaws in the rock crystal, these are largely concealed by the engraving. The foot is possibly associated, and the silver mount could be contemporary or later. There is minor wear, including some tarnishing, to the gilt silver mounts.
The glass, a large rim chip under mount, and a small rim chip. A large section of rim broken out and re-stuck and a crack runs from the rim half-way down the bowl. Wear to enamels on knop, the foot possibly associated. The foot and rim are made from bronze.

This exquisitely engraved rock crystal cup appears to celebrate the marriage between Franz, Graf von Hatzfeld und Gleichen (1676-1738) and Gräfin Anna Charlotte Elisabeth von Stadion-Thannhausen (1682-1763), which took place on November 25, 1708. The couple lived between Schloss Trachenberg and Vienna. As evidence of his rank, Count Franz soon became Geheimrat, or Privy Councillor, of the Holy Roman Empire.
