By descent in the family of the sitter.
Condition
The canvas is unlined with no major damages, a clear and even, if somewhat shiny, varnish. The paint surface has developed a distinctive and visible craquelure throughout, but there are no major damages and the picture appears to be in good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered minor retouchings and an unevenly applied varnish. In overall good condition, offered in a carved and gesso gilt wood frame in good condition.
