Condition

The canvas is unlined. The paint surface appears stable and well preserved. The varnish is slightly discoloured and there are some visible discoloured old retouchings in the dark tones of the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned small retouchings and there is a small scattering of further retouchings in the sitter’s cheek and hairline but overall no major damages. Offered in a carved and gesso gilt wood frame with a few chips and losses.

Catalogue Note

Augusta was the daughter of Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha. She married Frederick, Prince of Wales, on 26 April 1736, and their son became George III in 1760, on the death of his grandfather.

Another version of this type was sold London, Replica Shoes 's, 10 July 1991, lot 116 and is now at Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire (inv. no. NT 1548064), attributed to the Studio of Jean-Baptiste van Loo.
