Condition

All three paintings are unlined with dirty paint surfaces, discoloured varnishes and scattered surface scratches and abrasions. The copy after Murillo: The paint surface is somewhat degraded. There are two unrepaired tears each measuring about 3 inches: one at the hind leg of the sheep, the other at the centre left margin The copy after Gainsborough: In seemingly good overall condition with no major damages. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish and very few retouchings. Portrait of an unidentified man: In seemingly good condition with an uneven varnish and very few retouchings. All three paintings are offered unframed.

Catalogue Note

The original paintings by Gainsborough and Murillo are found in the National Gallery, London (inv. nos NG683 and NG176, respectively).

The three canvases are sold together with a silvered spelter relief of a stag by Fritz Diller, dated 1912 (52.2 x 42 cm).
