Description
- Saint John the Evangelist from a Calvary Group
- polychromed limewood
- French, 13th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few small losses including to the curls of the hair at the front and to the bottom edge. There is minor evidence of past worming around the base and the underside of the sculpture. The wooden back-plate is probably of a later date and is held in place by metal pins. The polychromy has likely been refreshed. There is wear to the polychromy throughout, including some losses, notably around the drapery at the front on the proper left side. There are a few further losses to the polychromy including to both hands, to the forehead and to the neck at the back. There is craquelure to the polychromy throughout. A section of the drapery around the proper left arm appears to be carved separately.

Catalogue Note
The present figure of Saint John is a beautiful example of a type that flourished in 13th-century France, when an emphasis on emotion began to prevail in art. The short curly hairstyle served to emphasise the young age of the mourning Apostle. Compare two similar figures of Saint John formerly in the collects
ion of the Musée van Stolk in Haarlem.
