Provenance

Traditionally believed to have been bought by Bishop Van Unen, Rome, in the mid-19th century.

Condition

The support is uncradled and consists of three vertically joined planks. The paint surface is stable with some minor frame abrasion but otherwise no major damages. There is a degree of wear in the red of the Virgin’s dress. There are scattered, discoloured, retouchings throughout that are visible to the naked eye, including some in the right side of the Virgin’s face. It appears that a significant portion of the bright blue drapery in the lower portion of the painting is re-painted. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a very thick and streaky varnish and confirms the aforementioned scattered retouchings, though these appear mainly cosmetic in nature. Offered in a composite gilt wood frame in good condition.
