Description

  • Dalmatian School, 18th century
  • Portrait of a Dalmatian
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Condition

The canvas is unlined and the paint surface is stable and in fairly good overall original condition. There are a handful of tiny old holes in the canvas at the upper margin, and some minor scuffs and losses throughout. The figure of the dog itself is well preserved with much of the original impasto remaining. There is a small hole and some thinning of paint in the shadows of his tummy. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish dull and slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a very patchy and streaky varnish but very little restoration. Offered in a carved painted black and gilt frame with some chips and losses.
