Description
- giltwood, poplar, pine, mirror glass
- 183cm. high, 93cm. wide; 6ft., 3ft. ¾in.
the frame elaborately carved with bull-rushes, rocaille and foliage with mirrored sections
Condition
The mirror plates with some foxing and losses to silver, especially at the juncture of the two plates. Some losses to the glass, especially below the upper-left c-scroll and on a small area on the bottom right (visible on the catalogue photograph). The gilding with an attractive patina might nonetheless benefit from a light clean according to taste. Some rubbings
and chips, especially to the upper part of the cresting and feet. The back appears to be the original one. Finally, a section of the upper-left carving has been broken and repaired. This elegantly carved mirror is ready to place.

The present mirror is an excellent example of the Piedmontese take on French rococo looking glasses. It belongs to a group that dispenses with the mirrored border inherited from the Régence designs still current towards the mid-eighteenth century.
One related example was sold these rooms, 17 July 1970, another one, from the collects ion of Giuseppe Rossi, Turin, sold these rooms, 10-12 March 1999, lot 30, and a third one in a private collects ion is illustrated in R. Antonetto, op. cit., p. 194, fig. 22.b, and reproduced here in fig. 1.
