Condition

This sculptural pair of console tables is in reasonable condition, with overall marks and scratches consistent with age. The alabaster marble tops display cracks, repairs and scratches throughout, with some chips to the edges and further losses to the veneer (some of these pieces are detached but present). One piece on the right back corner and another piece on the front left of one top detached and in need of some attention. The other top with one piece detached on the front-left centre, and one chip on the front-left corner. The giltwood with minor chips and cracks, and with traces of old woodworm which appears to be no longer active. The carved giltwood with some wear would greatly benefit from a light clean. There is a large repaired crack to the side and back of the centre moulding to the back right leg of one.

The bold carving on the present tables relates them to the sumptuous examples of Baroque tables made towards the end of the 17th century. However, the smaller proportions, the shape of the legs and the evolution of the c- and s-scrolls betray a later date of execution, those 1730s during which the baroque and rococo styles coexisted.
