Catalogue Note

The Rolle family of Devon represented various constituencies during the 17th and 18th centuries. John Rolle (1679-1730) ran for Exeter in 1722, winning against three other candidates. His eldest son Henry (1708-50) stood for the local seat of Barnstaple in 1741 unopposed, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Role of Stevenstone in 1748 and died unmarried and without heirs 1750. His brothers John Rolle Walter (1714-79) and Denys (1725-97) were also active in politics.
