Description

  • Silver, Ivory
  • 29cm., 11 1/2 in. high
on shaped circular foot cast with a coffee spray (earth), phoenix (fire), and bulrushes (water), the richly chased rococo body decorated with flies (air) hovering over fruit, and other motifs, engraved on either side with a coat-of-arms, similar hinged cover, cherub finial, ivory handle, scratch weight '33 6'

Provenance

John Rodney Pollexfen Bastard of Kitley, Yealmpton, Devon, sold Christie's, London, 27 March 1968, lot 176. Included in this sale were the following items bearing the same coat-of-arms: a pair of salvers, William Cripps, London, 1748 (lot 172) and a two-handled cup and covers, Thomas Heming, London, 1750 (lot 175).

Condition

Good clear marks to upper rim of body within rocaille decoration. The cover part marked inside. The underside stamped once to centre with makers marks only. Very good gauge. The ivory handle with various hairlines and striations, the lower pin does not currently fit all the way through. One side of the body with significant silver solder repair to upper scrolling cartouche around the coat of arms. Otherwise the casting is crisp and in good condition.
