Catalogue Note
Various models similar to the present lot are known of this period by eminent silversmiths including John Wickes, John Edwards, and Paul de Lamerie, with whom Archambo served his apprenticeship between 1738 and 1747. The date of this tureen (1743) suggests it was influenced by the Lamerie workshop and comparisons can be drawn with a tureen by Lamerie of 1747, with similar eagle finial (sold Christies London, 27 November 2012, lot 775).
An almost identical example by Peter Archambo, London, 1744, with lion embellished feet sold Replica Shoes 's, New York (Parke-Bernet), November 23 1971, lot 164. Interestingly, the exact model of the present lot was used for two separate pairs of soup tureens and stands, Robert Garrard, London, 1809 and 1810, sold Replica Shoes 's Parke-Bernet, 10 June 1975, lot 499 and Christies London, 29 June 1955, lot 124.
