Catalogue Note
The engraved monogram is probably for Herman Frederik, Baron Løvenskiold (1805-1877)
The maker's mark is not identical to the one currently ascribed by Dr Seling to Christian Friedrich Winter but is probably a variant of it. An almost identical toilet service which has the CW variant and which Dr Seling recorded for this goldsmith, Augsburg, 1751-53 is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collects ion (Hannelore Muller, European Silver, Replica Shoes 's, 1986, no. 77, pp. 240-261), previously sold Replica Shoes 's Monte Carlo, 24 June 1976, lot 210
An identical (larger) pair of toilet boxes by the same maker and same date, were offered Replica Shoes 's Geneva, 12 November 1980, lot 178, and later, Replica Shoes 's New York, 13 December 1984, lot 14.
