Description

  • A gold and hardstone snuff box and three gold snuff boxes, 18th/19th century
  • gold, agate, enamel
  • 5.5cm., 2 1/8 in. ; 6.3cm., 2 1/2 in. ; 7.5cm., 3in. ; 8.4cm. 3 1/4 in. wide
the first, cartouche form, the lid and base of figured brown agate, the sides and borders chased with leaves and shells or diaper on a matted ground; the second, two-colour gold, rectangular with slightly bombé sides, engine-turned, between sides and borders chased with flowers on matted ground, maker’s mark SB a knot between in a vertical lozenge, French titre and departmental garantie number 3[?], 1809-19; the third rectangular with cut corners, wavy engine-turning within cut flower and leaf borders, maker’s mark L & C incuse, further struck 18k, circa 1805;  the fourth, Rémond, Lamy, Mercier & Co., rectangular with rounded corners, oval medallion on lid with name erased, ground engine-turned within blue enamel flower heads and cut leaves, maker’s mark in horizontal lozenge, Geneva occupation 3e titre and grosse garantie and French and unofficial Geneva 3e titre, 1809-1814

Condition

1. agate: overall good condition, minor chip to corner of base panel, 47.2gr. 2. two-colours gold: overall good order apart from traces of solders to right end, 93.5gr. 3. rectangular with cut-corners: good condition overall, 77.7gr. 4. good condition apart from wear and uplifting to lid above hinge, probably as a result of wear, left side of lid lifting up slightly and not closing properly, 51.9gr.
