  • 9cm., 3½in. wide ; 7.5 cm., 3in. wide
the first, German, second half 18th century, of double-opening shaped rectangular form, lid and base painted with extraordinary mythological subjects, the sides with flowers, the interior of the lids painted en grisaille with quayside subjects, reeded silver mounts, one lid shows Cyparissus, beloved by Apollo, whose grief at the death of his t.mes stag turned him into a cypress tree, the other lid shows Apollo, Meleager and the Calydonian boar;the second, Augsburg, mid 18th century,circular, scalloped, initialled JB probably for Johann Bergmuller, painted overall with colourful pastoral subjects, animals and insects, silver mounts unmarked
