the first probably Bilston, circa 1760, rectangular, the lid painted with Juno in her peacock-drawn chariot flying through stormy clouds, the interior of the lid with an oval portrait of Lady Fenhoulet with fur-trimmed muff, the sides and base with flower sprays on a gilt diaper ground, wavy gold mounts; the second, South Staffordshire, circa 1760-65, rectangular, the lid transfer-printed and coloured with l’Amourette, the sides and base painted by a different hand with lovers in parkland, within raised gilt ornament, wavy gilt.mes

1. Good unrestored condition with minor haircracks on lid, light wear on base, narrow scrape to rim of left side base, original bright gilding on mounts.
2. Excellent painting on lid, condition generally very good.

Catalogue Note
The portrait of Miss Ann Day, later wife of Sir Peter Fenhoulet, on the interior of the first box, is based on an engraving by Richard Purcell, after the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, now in the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg.
