Description

  • Paper, ebonised mahogany and brass.
  • larger: each panel 198cm. by 64cm.; 6ft. 6in., 2ft. 1in. and smaller: each panel 185cm. by 60cm.; 6ft. 1in., 2ft.
comprising: a four-fold screen with one side decorated with cut-paper panels from 'Cost.mes s Du Quadville Historique' and the reverse with cut coloured plates of fashionably dressed women, the ebonised frames with finely chased acanthus cast handles and canister hinges, and the other four-fold screen profusely decorated with cartoons, notables of the t.mes and vignettes with some titles in manuscript

Probably William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858)

Condition

The large is of good quality (the brass is nice worked and hinges whilst sticky very good) and the smaller very decorative. Both with losses throughout. Multiple tears and numerous gaps were prints have become detached. Tired, dirty and soiled from many years in store. Punctures to paper on both and evidence of being stored for some period of t.mes .
