Témoins originels de l’histoire de l’art Maori, les patu sont, au-delà de leur usage comme armes de poing, des insignes de prestige qui se transmettaient de génération en génération. Dans son beau classicisme, celui-ci s’affirme par le très grand raffinement de son décor en spirales champlevées  – inspiré des fougères arborescentes.  Ce décor, mis en valeur par les nuances de la patine,  s’inscrit élégamment dans le mouvement vertical de l’œuvre, évocation stylisée d’une forme végétale.

Original test.mes nts to the history of Maori art, the patu are - above and beyond their use as hand-wielded weapons - prestigious insignia that were handed down from generation to generation. In its beautiful classicism, the one at hand stands out for the great refinement of its champlevé spiral decor - inspired by tree ferns. This decor, emphasized by the nuances of the patina, dovetails elegantly within the vertical bearing of the work, a stylized evocation of a vegetal form.
