Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Along the proper left side of the head, the shield has been broken and formerly glued the entire height . A knot in the wood creates a stabilised open crack to the lower left part of the shield, . Exceptional remain of the colours to the shield, partly erased to the projecting head, showing the elaborated carved linear patterns. Illegible inscription to the rear. A drill hole to the handle.

es - les boucliers Songye sculptés en leur centre de la représentation d’un masque Kifwebe sont très rares dans les collects
ions. Saisissants par leur dimension tant sculpturale que picturale, ces boucliers servaient plus « d'accessoires symboliques et emblématiques du pouvoir » que d'armes défensives (Hersak in de Heusch, Objects : Signs of Africa, 1995).
La beauté du décor abstrait - alternant de larges aplats rouges et noirs - accentue la force du visage projeté en très haut relief, scandé par le ryt.mes serré des motifs linéaires envahissant de manière classique le visage du Kifwebe. Selon Herzak (idem) à propos des sept boucliers Songye et Luba conservés au musée de Tervuren, « l'ensemble de ces dessins suggère un certain type de codification emblématique ». Ce dernier serait lié, d'après François Neyt (Songye, La redoutable statuaire Songye d’Afrique Centrale, 2004, p. 362), au parcours labyrinthique durant l'initiation du bukishi.
