Violet Bonham-Carter (née Asquith), daughter of the Prime Minister H. H. The two first.mes t at a dinner party in 1906 when he was thirty-one and she nineteen. She was left awestruck by his eloquence as he burst forth with a diatribe on the immensity of possible human accomplishment, "a torrent of magnificent language which appeared to be both effortless and inexhaustible and ended with the words I shall always remember: 'We are all worms. But I do believe that I am a glow-worm.'" When she returned home she announced to her father that for the first t.mes in her life she had seen genius (see Jenkins, Churchill, p.137).
