Catalogue Note

Derek Hill wrote the introduction to Mary Soames's book on Churchill's paintings - Winston Churchill His Life as a Painter, also helping her to select the paintings to be illustrated in the book. He wrote that Churchill's paintings 'have a painterly quality that transcends mere amateurish charm' (quoted in Mary Soames, A Daughter's Tale, Black Swan, London, 2011, p.15).
