Catalogue Note

Nicknamed ‘Robert des Ruines’, Hubert Robert became a popular figure in the 18th Century art world, where he was highly praised for his often fictionalised depictions of architectural ruins. Travelling to Rome in the 1750s, he developed close links with artists including Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Giovanni Paolo Panini, who helped to shape his artistic perspective, and here he sketched the recently excavated ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, alongside further architectural landmarks of the capital. The present work (alongside a counterproof taken from the drawing) was sketched in situ at the Palace of the Conservatives in Rome, and was a preparatory work for the circular-shaped painting Interior of an Ancient Temple at the Paris Salon of 1798, now housed in the Museum of Replica Handbags s in Dijon.
