Catalogue Note
This stool, which Mary used at her dressing table, is very similar to that which was moved into Winston and Clementine's special wart.mes
apartment in the underground complex under Storey's Gate, in Westminster. Hastily constructed, Clementine decorated this 'Annexe', as it became to be known, with the Churchills' own paintings, antiques and personal possessions, she painted the walls 'delicate colours' to offset the gloom of a blacked out London. The stool, like the offered lot, is photographed at Clementine's dressing table in her bedroom, and is illustrated in Mary Soames, A Churchill Family Album, London, 1982, fig.278.
