Catalogue Note
From the 8th to the 13th May 1946, Churchill visited the Netherlands with Clementine and Mary, a year after British and Canadian troops liberated the Western Netherlands. In Amsterdam, Churchill received the gold medal of the City and cruised on the Dam acclaimed by 30,000 Amsterdammers. Along their route, the Churchills were very much acclaimed and received huge quantities of presents including cigars, flowers and a silver model of a frigate (Morning Bulletin, Rockampton, Wednesday 15 May 1946). They finished their tour in Rotterdam, where Winston received a cigar box, now part of the National Trust collects
ion at Chartwell (Inventory Number 1101815), with the presentation inscription 'To Our Liberator Winston Churchill', and Mary was offered this sweetmeat basket probably at the same occasion. A monument for Winston Churchill was also created, engraved with the following: 'The world is open to you / Winston Churchill / member of honour of the town Council of Rotterdam / May 13th 1946.'
