  • Satyr Entwined with a Deer
  • stone
  • length: 82cm., 32¼in.
  • Executed in the first half of the 20th century.

Condition

Overall the condition of the stone is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The sculpture is an outdoor sculpture and there is some weathering to the surface. There is veining to the stone throughout and some of the veins are slightly open but are stable. There are some small losses, including to the satyr's nose and to the deer's ears and to the pan pipes. There are further small chips and abrasions to the surface. There are some areas of scratches, particularly to the deer's proper right front leg, shoulde , proper left back leg, head and part of its neck, as well as to the satyr's proper right leg.

Catalogue Note

The present sculpture is reminiscent of works by the celebrated British sculptor Charles Wheeler (1892-1974). Compare with his Fragment or Aspiration of circa 1930 (Crellin, op. cit., no. 63).
