Description

  • Male Saint, probably St. Thomas
  • oak, with an iron mount, on a wood stand
  • figure: 77cm., 30¼in.; base: 8cm., 3 1/8 in.
  • Executed in the early 16th century.

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are remnants of original polychromy in some of the crevices. The feet are lost. There are a few further small chips and losses, including to the drapery and to the edges and corners of the attribute of the saint. There is evidence of past worming to the wood, in particular to the drapery to the front below the attribute. There is some stable splitting consistent with material to the wood inlcuding to the drapery at the abdomen. There are also some minor splits running through the face. There may be some restoration to the nose. There is a loss to the proper right elbow. There appears to be a loss to the back on the proper right side. There may be some further losses to the back. There appears to be some restoration to the proper right shoulder and arm at the back. There are one or two small holes at the back near the bottom. There is a metal hook at the back of the sculpture behind the neck. There is dirt and wear to the base and some minor splitting consistent with material.
