Catalogue Note
The present lot is a rare marble example of a model first conceived by Troubetzkoy in bronze in 1898, then titled Princess M.N. Gagarina with her daughter Marina after the original subjects. One can speculate as to the artist’s motives for returning to this model, for on the Christmas Eve of 1907 his two year-old son Pierino, the only child to be born to his first wife Elin, died. The tender embrace of the subjects here, an archetype reworked according to Troubetzkoy’s own idiosyncrasies, is amplified by the soft surface texture of the marble and was perhaps an element of the couple’s mourning following the tragic loss of their son.
