This painting has an old lining which is nicely stabilizing the paint layer. The painting is quite visibly dirty, but it has been recently varnished and is certainly presentable as is. As one would expect, a few retouches can be seen under the old varnish. If the picture were cleaned, retouches would be removed and exposed around the edges, in the sky and in the paler blue colors of the distance. However, it may well be worthwhile to carefully clean the picture, as the palette would brighten considerably. Accurate retouching would then be required, but this is not unusual for a picture from this period. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
