carved through the layers of cinnabar lacquer to the green ground below, each side with a vertical landscape depicting a scholar and attendants on a rocky promontory among verdant trees framed by cragged cliffs on the sides and swirling clouds above, all reserved on a ground of incised key-fret and leiwen, the paper fan painted with a calligraphy pertaining to virtues and scholarly pursuits, followed by an inscription sui zai gengchen qinghe yue ying Yunshan Sanren zhi li shu jinzuo (‘encouraged by Yunshan Sanren, wrote a recent work in the 4th month of the gengchen year’, corresponding to 1880), the reverse with an inscription signed gengchen lixia fan Yu gong fuzi daren dejiao, houye Tang Yuyun shinian qishisi (‘apprentice Tang Yuyun, at the age of 74, follows the virtuous teaching of the respectable Master Yu on the Beginning of Summer in the gengchen year’, corresponding to 1880)

The paper is slightly torn along the mounting and there are some water stains. The lacquer is in quite good condition.
