Description

  • The Assumption of the Virgin, After Sir Peter Paul Rubens
  • Black and red chalk and watercolor, with touches of pen and brown ink, on three sheets of paper, laid down and varnished; arched top

Condition

Laid down, probably first onto another sheet, and then onto backing board. The sheet has been cut unevenly across the centre, then rejoined. Underneath the surface varnish, the condition of the actual sheet is hard to judge with any certainty, but it seems largely good, with the exception of some apparent cracks and repaired tears towards the edges. Sold in a damaged 19th-century gilded frame.
