Catalogue Note
The manner in which the flowers are drawn is very close to a study of flowers, executed in the same media and signed J Hubner, formerly in the Julius Held collects
ion.1 It has not, however, been possible to identify this artist, who was presumably German or Swiss.
The handling of the flowers in both our accomplished portrait and the flower drawing by Hubner is reminiscent of the style of Jean-Baptiste Pillement, whose work influenced many artists across Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
