Catalogue Note

This capriccio bears close similarities with certain drawings by the Venetian landscape painter Marco Ricci, for example, A Ruined Portico beside a Port. This comparison can best be made with those of Ricci's studies which are more loosely executed, with the addition of wash, and somet.mes s with sections executed solely in black chalk, which are relatively rare and less well-known.  The drawing is an imaginary view and could have been part of a sketchbook.
