Catalogue Note
Bikash Bhattacharjee’s paintings straddle the genres of realism, naturalism and surrealism. While the artist describes his work as a ‘combination of attitudes and techniques’, large-scale abstracted works such as Abstract I are extremely rare. A gifted colorist, Bhattacharjee achieves mastery in capturing the elusive quality of light, heightening the tonal and textural effects of his work.
Bhattacharjee explains: “To me, art is the exposure of a human being, the laying bare of his or her soul. In every phase of my life I have tried, through my work, to make a sinewy stat.mes nt. To draw sap from all that surrounds me ...
“Many of my images have also come to me from the depth of my dreams. Somet.mes s I have used these images to express my consciousness of the environment—I have often tried to establish [a dialogue] between the conscious and the subconscious. The helpless insecure boy is still within me - somet.mes s he wants to escape from the relentless reality, on his wings.” (Bhattacharjee rpt. Chitrakoot Art Gallery, www.iconinfo.net).
