Catalogue Note

The repoussé scene depicts the death of John of Nepomuk (Bohemia) (1345 - 1393), national saint of the Czech Republic. In 1393 John supported the pope in Rome in opposition to Venceslaus, the King of the Romans and Bohemia, who was in support of the Avignon papacy. The angry King ordered John to be tortured and thrown into the river Vltrava from the Charles bridge in Prague. The image on the right is taken from a monument in Prague depicting the legendary Bohemian scene of Nepomuk.
