Catalogue Note
Appelées boka, les pipes céphalomorphes étaient chez les Ngbaka des signes de prestige. Selon Burssens (in Grooters, 2007, p. 127-128), « Perlo faisait remarquer [en 1912] que seuls des hommes âgés en utilisaient, sans doute des notables qui pouvaient se permettre l'acquisition d'objets soigneusement sculptés ». Celle-ci se distingue par la tension de la courbe évoquant le corps stylisé du personnage, l'abdomen renflé par le fourneau taillé à l'oblique, l'ensemble enveloppé de bandelettes de cuivre. Le visage est orné d'une scarification nervurée, s'étirant jusqu'au nez. Très belle patine, profonde. Voir Mildner-Spindler (1992, couverture, n° 15) pour une pipe très comparable dans les collects
ions du Museum für Völkerkunde de Berlin.
