La forme épurée, l'élégance des lignes et la beauté de la patine laquée ont rendu célèbres les tambours nedundu des Mangbetu.
Sculptés dans un bois très dur et minutieusement patinés, ils étaient joués en groupe dans un ensemble orchestral, lors des festivités ou des cérémonies rituelles, principalement liées aux chefs (Brincard, 1990, p. 119). « Instruments de prestige, les tambours à fente de ce type étaient également offerts aux hauts dignitaires par les chefs Mangbetu, afin de les investir d'une autorité » (Burssens, 1992, p. 24).
