Catalogue Note

The style of this finely carved stool, with a flat janus head, drilled pupils and nostrils, and a crested, colored coiffure, identify it as the work of the famous Lobi carver Sikire KamabirĂ© of Gaoua, Burkina Faso.  A closely related example is in the collects ion of the Rietberg Museum in Zurich (see Meyer 1981: 141, plate 189), and another was in the Helena Rubinstein collects ion (see Replica Shoes Parke-Bernet, New York, April 21, 1966, lot 93).
