Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The paint surface is clean and under a glossy varnish. The dark tones of the sitter's bonnet and dress are slightly abraded.
An old restored tear or canvas join runs parallel to the upper margin approximately 4cm. in. The paint surface shows a propensity to lift in this area and there are two very small specks of paint spots along the join.
Another potential canvas join is visible parallel to and approx. 4cm. in from the lower margin and extensive retouchings between this line and the margin can be discerned with the naked eye, as well as to the shadow on the lower half of her left hand sleeve.
Inspection under UV light is impeded by the reflective varnish but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals an area of retouchings to her left hand as well as scattered spot retouchings to her ruff, a few scattered retouchings in the background and a handful of very small spot retouchings to her face. Older retouchings are harder to discern.
Offered in a stained and painted wood frame in good condition.
