Condition

The original is slightly redder in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The stable support consists of three vertical panels joined together and dovetailed at eight points along each join. The support is bevelled along the upper, right and left hand margins. The panel joins are visible on the paint surface, which is secure, though dirty and under an old and uneven varnish. The upper halves of the panel joins seem to have been worked on as the varnish is particularly uneven here, and just to the right of the sitter's face and collar. The paint in these areas seems somewhat abraded. A small dent centre right, as visible in the catalogue illustration, has resulted in some paint loss. There are further small patches of paint loss in his hair and upper left. Inspection under UV is impeded by the reflective varnish, but confirms the aforementioned retouchings and seems to indicate strengthenings to teh sitter's right hand sleeve and collar. More recent scattered spot retouchings to the background lower left and his chest also fluoresce. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition.
