- Portraits of Thomas Papillon of Papillon Hall and Acrise, Kent; and his wife Jane Broadnax (d.1698)
- oil canvas
Condition
STRUCTURE
Both canvases have been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
Both paintings appear to be in fairly good condition. There are minor abrasions to the edges of the canvases, and in the portrait of Jane there is retouching to two small old tears upper left. There is also an area of over paint in the lower section of the male sitter's hair. There is an old, discoloured and dirty varnish overall on both paintings.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity and discolouration of the varnish in both paintings. There are no apparent signs of recent retouching.
FRAME
Held in carved and gilded wooden frames.
