Provenance

From the end of the nineteenth century on loan to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg from the city of Nuremberg (inv. no. 15; de-accessioned in 1922);
Private collects ion, Sweden.

Condition

The canvas is unlined. There are three old restored damages patched to the reverse, the largest of which is horizontal, to the left of his waist and approx 7 cm long. The lighter areas of the paint surface are well preserved. Retouching work is discernable in the aforementioned damages and is confirmed under UV which overall is hampered by an old yellow varnish.
