William Gordon Cornwallis Eliot, 4th Earl of Saint Germans (1829-1881), Port Eliot, St. Germans, Cornwall, when listed in the 1865 Catalogue of Pictures at Port Eliot;
Thence by direct family descent.
Literature
H.R. Bolton, Catalogue of the Pictures at Port Eliot belonging to the Right Honble the Earl of St. Germans, 23 September 1865, cat. no. 7 as hung in the Entrance Hall by Sebastian Ricci.
Condition
The canvas has been relined.
The paint surface is uneven, with areas of lifting and a fine craquelure running throughout.
Two canvas joins are visible on the paint surface, one parallel to the lower margin, approximately 20 cm. in to the canvas and another running between this join and the margin at the centre (both are vaguely visible in the catalogue illustration). There are three patches of paint loss which seem to have been secured and a 3cm. dent to the painting lower right.
The canvas has been torn or possibly replaced in the upper right hand corner (as also seen in the catalogue illustration). This 12 by 8 cm. section is loose from the relining.
There is an uneven varnish covering the work which rather impedes a proper inspection of the work under UV light. However, this does reveal fairly extensive retouchings throughout the work.
Offered in an ornate gilt wood and plaster frame with a number of losses.
