STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is some visible retouching throughout the background particularly un the upper left along an old faint horizontal stretcher bar line. There is a fine craquelure, concentrated in the face and a thick layer of varnish overall. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish whilst revealing some further minor areas of retouching to the sitter's sleeve, neckscarf and cheek in the shadow cast by her nose.
