Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of Francis, Lord Brudenell and his wife Frances, daughter of the Earl of Sussex. As his father predeceased his grandfather, he inherited the Earldom of Cardigan on the latter's death in 1703 whilst he was travelling in Italy. On his return he married Lady Elizabeth Bruce, daughter of the Earl of Elgin and Ailesbury. He was Master of the Buckhounds to Queen Anne, 1712-15.
