STRUCTURE Original stable flat panel. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is a very fine even craquelure overall in keeping with the painting's age. There is also evidence of some minor paint loss in the lower centre above the sitter's hand, as can be seen in the catalogue illustration and there is a further very minor retouched paint loss below the sitter's eye. There is evidence of a little abrasion to the panel edge in the centre right and some old retouching to the sitter's cheek and forehead, but otherwise no other significant signs of wear or damage. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a thin uneven layer of discoloured varnish but no other areas of retouching are visible apart from those mentioned above.
