Description

  • Ludger tom Ring the Younger
  • Still life with a bouquet of flowers in a porcelain vase
  • oil on panel

Condition

The stable, flat support consists of two vertical panels, cradled to the reverse. The paint surface is secure, if a little dirty and its detail is well-preserved. The brown pigments in the background, and the whites of the butterfly upper left, the central flower and the vase appear slightly abraded, and some red pigment is showing through the blue flower upper right. The panel join is visible on the paint surface and some old, discoloured retouchings can be seen along it. Some fairly extensive retouchings can also be discerned to the background of the painting. These seem to have been applied over the thick layer of, slightly yellowed, varnish which covers the work. These retouchings are most notable in an old restored vertical surface scratch to the lower right background (as visible in the catalogue illustration). Inspection under UV light is impeded by the reflective varnish but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals fairly extensive, scattered spot retouchings to the flowers, most notably in the whites to pinks of the carnation upper left, the yellow flower upper right, the left-hand white lily, the central white flower and the red flower just below this. Though these are extensive in number, they do not 'rewrite' the detail of the work. Offered in a wood and parcel gilt frame which has some detail painted in grey. This is in fairly good condition, if a little rubbed.
