Condition
Good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Filled crack on the proper left side of the head. A few other thin cracks and small chips. The proper right arm broken and glued between the elbow and wrist, as visible in the catalogue illustration. Fine nuanced patina.

Cette grande effigie d'ancêtre se rattache au type défini par Lehuard comme "style de Kolo", caractérisé par la rondeur du visage et la bouche esquissant un sourire (Lehuard, 1989, II : 394). Elle se distingue par la dignité exprimée à la fois dans la dimension et dans la pose - assis sur le séant - réservée à la représentation des chefs. L'intensité de l'expression - les yeux sertis d'éclats de porcelaine - est accentuée par le très beau volume de la tête et par le naturalisme des traits, finement modelés.
