Catalogue Note

Karaboro caryatid altar support, Burkina Faso

Whilst anthropologists link the Karaboro (south-western Burkina Faso) with the Senufo people, some of their traditions, particularly in the villages of Labola, Tiefora, and Kassal, link them more directly with the Bobo, their northern neighbours. Amongst these traditions are cults dedicated to the forces that control the balance and harmony of the world, which materialise on altars erected in the villages.

This caryatid post supports a vessel that would have contained materials associated with the protective deity. The post is distinguished by the compact volumes of the female figure, which blend naturally into the form of the trunk, and by the deeply eroded grain of the dense and exceedingly hard wood. The post's synergy with the natural material it is created from seems a fitting tribute to the spirits of harmony, which generally materialized in vegetation.
