Description

  • door 226cm. high, 113cm. wide and with surround 287.5cm. high and 162cm. wide; 7ft. 5in., 3ft. 8½in., 9ft. 5in., 5ft. 3½in.
the six panelled door centred on a bead and acanthus carved divide, each fielded panel with ribbon tied border and egg and dart decoration, the key hole covered with a finely chased gilt brass leaf cast escutcheon, the reverse of simpler form, together with the parcel gilt and cream painted door surround surmounted by a pediment with borders of egg and dart and dentil decoration above a cushion carved apron of floral scroll work and cornucopia, the jambs with acanthus, line and bead and reel decoration each upright with a skirting block, the door with a label printed His Grace, The Duke of Devonshire, K.G., Chesterfield (LM) and by hand Dukes' Sitting Room the other components with further paper labels, again inscribed Dukes Study and the skirting blocks with Dukes Study in pencil (8)

Condition

The door is in good condition but has many marks and stains and would benefit from a clean and re-polish. The door frame is in fair condition but has dirt and chips throughout. The cornice has a repaired section to the right side. The frieze has some minor losses, and is missing an acanthus leaf tip the left side.The jambs have vertical splits but are in otherwise good condition.
