Tandis que le buste disparaît derrière le reliquaire ventral surdimensionné, la tête s'impose, magistrale - portée vers l'avant par le cou puissant, la longueur accentuée par la haute charge ornée de plumes. La force qui en émane repose à la fois sur la dynamique des formes, la tension des lignes étirées et l'extrême sensibilité dans le détail des traits - en particulier dans le modelé de la bouche aux lèvres charnues finement ourlées, entrouverte sur des dents limées.                                                                                                            

A la puissance signifiée par la multiplication des charges magiques - à des fins de protection - s'ajoutent ici l'accumulation de matières et le rare jeu pictural offert par la couleur des tissus, mettant superbement en valeur les nuances de la patine brun rouge, profonde, brillante sur les parties saillantes.

Inscrits à l'encre blanche une première fois sur le dos du personnage et une seconde au revers de la base, le numéro d'inventaire et la mention "57752 Majombe Dorbritz", témoignent de l'histoire ancienne de cette superbe statue fétiche nkisi.
Le nom de l'officier colonial allemand Dorbritz apparaît dans les annales coloniales en 1900 (au Cameroun) et en 1902 (Reid, 1974 : 261), lié cette fois aux tractations diplomatiques et commerciales de l'Etat indépendant du Congo (actuelle République Démocratique du Congo). Plusieurs œuvres qu'il collects a à cette période entrèrent avant 1910 dans les collects ions du Museum für Völkerkunde de Munich, et au Linden Museum de Stuttgart.

A superb Kongo or Vili power figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo

cf. a related figure on the cover of the catalogue of the important 'Magies' (1996) exhibition at the Musée Dapper. The two figures appear to be so closely related that they may both be by the same hand (both figures were collects ed by Visser and later in the Linden Museum, Stuttgart).

The bust of this figure is obscured by the over-sized reliquary container and the majestic head exerts a considerable presence. Thrusting forward from the powerful neck, the length accentuated by the height of the feathers, the power which emanates from the head comes from its formal dynamism, the tension of its stretched lines, and the great sensitivity with which the features have been executed – particularly the modelling of the mouth, with its large lips slightly opened and the filed teeth on display.

In addition to the power present in the several protective magical charges, this figure adds a rare pictorial quality in its accumulation of colourful fabrics, which greatly enhance the nuanced colour of the reddish-brown patina, glossy in places.

Written in white ink on the back of the figure and on the bottom of the base is '57752 Majombe Dorbritz', proof of the considerable age of this superb nkisi figure. The name of Dorbritz, who was a German colonial officer, appears in colonial records for 1900 (in Cameroon) and in 1902 (Reid, 1974: 261), on both occasions in connection with business and diplomatic affairs in the Congo Free State (the current Democratic Republic of the Congo). Many sculptures collects ed by Dorbritz entered the collects ions of the Museum für Völkerkunde, Munich, and the Linden Museum, Stuttgart, prior to 1910.
